The Statement About God That Shook Me
I talk a lot about Jesus. I am not apologetic about that.
Today I read a quote from the popular Christian author, Max Lucado: God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.
That simple statement shook me.
When I first read it, a wave of relief washed over me. Too often we feel pressured to be something we are not in hopes that God will love us. The reality is, God loves you right now. In the midst of what you are doing and how you are living, God loves you.
Lucado tells a story of when he was buying an ice-cream cone for his young daughter. They were at the park and when he took the freshly scooped cone to where she was playing in the sandbox, he was horrified to find her shoveling sand into her mouth. Here he was offering something amazing to eat, yet she was devouring something that was not clean, tasty, or even edible. Did he love her any less in that moment? Of course not!
God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. This is the second wave that hit me: something has to change. By no stretch of the imagination do I reflect Jesus, therefore something has to change. I will have to think, act, and love differently.
If Jesus were to walk in your shoes for a day, what would look different? Same job, same boss, same wife and kids, same neighbors, same lifestyle, but different heart. The reality is we all need to change something. If Jesus were to live my life for a day he would probably be more friendly to my neighbors and less judgmental of people's shortcomings. He would go out of his way to provide for the poor and needy and be more patient to my wife. Simply put, he would love better.
Christian or not, I hope you are trying to be more like Jesus. Jesus is the model for humanity; he is the mold God is pouring us in. And he loves you.
God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.
