Taking a Sledgehammer to God's Temple
We live in a culture today where we have grown accustomed to rating our experience and giving our opinion on everything. Whether it is the television show we watched, the pizza we ate, the Uber ride we took, or our friend’s picture on social media we don’t like. In our opinion, everything is open for us to critique and compare.
Francis Chan talks about in his most recent book, Letter to the Church, that we too often bring this same mentality into our churches. “Instead of marveling at the incredible mystery that we are a part of God’s body, we critique the leadership, the music, the programs, and anything else we can think of.” We come away from Sunday morning poking holes in our pastor’s sermons with the same conviction as our favorites sport’s team play calls; we critique our church family worst than People magazine does the latest fashion trends of the year.
Could it be that we are taking a sledgehammer to the foundation blocks of God’s temple?
We are God’s temple. Have you ever spent a long enough moment to reflect on that mystery? Not figure it out, not consider all its implications, just let it sink in. Somehow by the blood of Jesus, I became worthy of joining with others to form a dwelling place for God. You have become worthy of that too! We are God’s temple! Do you have goosebumps yet? I sure do!
Now consider this:
Do you not know that you are God's temple
and that God's Spirit dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him.
For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (emphasis added)
I cannot think of a single devout Jesus follower who would rip out the pages of their Bible or take a sledgehammer to the brick and mortar of their church. Why? Because they consider these to be sacred. Then why are we so quick to gossip, slander leadership, and divide the church?
Back to Francis: “I can’t help but see out lameness in failing to see the beauty in God’s design for the Church. Heavenly beings are shocked by God’s Church, while many on earth just yawn.” Think about what God is saying in Ephesians 3:8-10 (go read it real quick)! God wanted to show the heavenly beings His incomparable wisdom. . . so He created the Church! This is unreal!
Do you see why this matters so much?
Many today treat the church as optional. Many see the church as an outdated way to connect with God that has outlived its usefulness. Many would rather offer their critique or opinion, rather than their time or energy. But when we see the church in God’s perspective, we should be left amazed.
Don’t take a sledgehammer to God’s temple;
Don’t offer opinion over love;
Don’t offer critique over amazement;
Don’t cheapen the sacred.
“In him you also are being build together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” - Ephesians 2:22
