The Greatest Story Ever Told
A good story must have two primary characteristics in order to hold an audience: it must be deemed important and interesting. The various elements, the voice, and even the topic of the story are fluid, but the way the story is told to emphasize importance and entice interest are crucial for its success.
We have been written into the greatest story ever told. That is a bold statement. Whether we recognize it or not, we are characters woven into the narrative of what God's is doing in the world. God is the painter to the canvas, the sculptor to the slab of marble, the author to the story and the creator to the creation. What a powerful reminder for us.
However, in order for this to be considered the greatest story, it must pass the criterion that was established above: importance and interest.
Importance. God's working in human history is of the upmost importance for three reasons: he exists, he cares, and he gives meaning to life. All cultures point to some higher being that is capable of creating the universe and everything within it. Science has yet to provide an answer outside of a divine creator, and that divine creator cares deeply for its creation. So-much-so, that he was willing to die through the incarnation of Jesus. Finally, God provides a meaning for life. A meaning that is significant and purposeful because it points outside of ourselves and to something higher. God's existence and workings are imperative because they establish truth.
Interest. If you are not gripped by God's story, you are not paying close enough attention. Rebellion and sacrifice; love and loss; life and death. This is the story that has the biggest implications on humanity, the story that has the ability to shift and transform people’s way of living. This is a story with great influence and power. Finally, the most impactful element of this story is that it is living. God's story is alive and you are a string added to the quilt. You play a significant part in the story, don't take that lightly.
We watch stories on the television, we listen to stories on the radio, we read stories on our social media feeds, and we live a story by what we do in our life. God is doing something remarkable in the world and can use you to bolster his message of renewal, hope, and love. I encourage you not to lose sight of the importance you play in the greatest story ever told!
